Music genre- Grime
Grime is a genre of music that emerged in east London in the early 2000s. It developed out of UK electronic music styles including UK garage and jungle. Also influenced by Jamaican hip hop. Rapping is a significant element of the style and lyrics often revolve around everyday street life. Prominent artists include Lethal Bizzle, Wiley, Ghetts, JME and Skepta. Media effect for music magazines
Types of reading-
- Preferred reading- Love all of the content/messages.
- Oppositional reading- Hates the content/message.
- Negotiated reading- Like some bits, dislikes others.
- Aberrant reading- Do not understand the content/message.
Effects-
- The hypodermic needle model- The message of the music magazine is understood and accepted by the audience. For example, saying one type of genre is better than another one.
- Two-step flow (Modern version of the hypodermic needle model)- The people who explain and diffuse the content to others. Relevant to people with more access to the music magazine, for example, monthly subscribers and dedicated fans. The monthly subscribers will be the opinion leaders of the magazine whereas the people who buy/read the magazine every few months will be the opinion followers.
- Uses and gratifications- People are not completely influenced by mass media but use the media to get specific satisfaction from their personal music taste and favourite bands.
- Reception theory- When the meaning of the content is not related to the article but the writers have to trust the reader's culture competence and media literacy to understand.
- Obstinate audience theory- Producer v.s the Audience. The audience control what messages they want to listen to and they control what the producers make because they producers have to work with what the audience want and enjoy.
- Drip, drip, drip effect or Cultivation differential- How mass media slowly change our views and desires through gradual reinforcement of their ideas. For example the constant reinforcement of 'this band is great' and eventually, we will start to believe it as well.

My magazine
I have called my magazine 'Badman ting' because it links to grime music because of the use of informal taboo language in grime.
I have used black, red and yellow in my colour scheme because it connotes dark but youthful music to links to rap.
My model is wearing dark clothing to connote the 'underground' vibe in the grime music world.

Grime magazine example and target audience
Magazine cover looks to be traditional as the main part of the magazine is the grime artist Giggs in the centre of the magazine. Masthead is covered by the large image.
As you can see the artist ‘Giggs’ has straight eye contact with the audience this draws attention to the reader. As you can see the artist ‘Giggs’ has straight eye contact with the audience this draws attention to the reader. They placed him in the middle of the page to emphasis that he is main feature of the magazine. The medium shot that is taken is used to show us his outfit, which makes a huge link to the grime genre of this magazine it also shows us his chain which gives him a high status and make us think that he is someone important and is respected. He has no emotion on his face; however he looks confident because he has his up and looks relaxed by slightly tilting his head to the side which gives off a carefree attitude. The colours that are used are pretty basic; red, white and the background is black.
I think that the target audiences for this magazine are people aged 15-24 year olds as the artist that are listed to the right side of the magazine are young artist which people between that age would listen to and would be interested to read about, particularly if they are keen about the grime scene. Overall, I think this magazine will be more attracted by males because of the colours that are being used which are very simple colours but bold. There is not much on the front cover of this magazine; there is only an image of the grime artist ‘Giggs’ which will attract an audience of people that are interested in grime.
Different music magazines

Vibe is an American music and entertainment magazine founded by producer Quincy Jones. The publication predominantly features R&B and hip-hop music artists, actors and other entertainers. After shutting down production in Summer 2009, Vibe was purchased by the private equity investment fund InterMedia Partners and is now issued semi-monthly with double covers, with a larger online presence. The magazine's target demographic is predominantly young, urban followers of hip-hop culture. In 2014, the magazine moved online-only.
David Carson
David Carson's
David Carson is an American graphic designer, art director and surfer. He is best known for his innovative magazine design, and use of experimental typography. He was the art director for the magazine Ray Gun, in which he employed much of the typographic and layout style for which he is known. In particular, his widely imitated aesthetic defined the so-called "grunge typography" era.
Timeline
1980: Carson's first contact with graphic design was in 1980 at the University of Arizona during a two-week graphics course, taught by Jackson Boelts.
1983: In 1983, Carson started to experiment with graphic design and found himself immersed in the artistic and bohemian culture of Southern California.
1987: He was also the art director of a spinoff magazine, Transworld Snowboarding, which began publishing in 1987.
1992: Carson was hired by publisher Marvin Scott Jarrett to design Ray Gun, an alternative music and lifestyle magazine that debuted in 1992.
1995: In 1995, Carson left Ray Gun to found his own studio, David Carson Design, in New York City.
1998: In 1998, Carson worked with Professor John Kao of the Harvard Business School on a documentary entitled The Art and Discipline of Creativity.

Ray Gun was an American alternative rock-and-roll magazine, first published in 1992 in Santa Monica, California. Led by founding art director David Carson, Ray Gun explored experimental magazine typographic design. The result was a chaotic, abstract style, not always readable, but distinctive in appearance.

MY colour scheme
The colours I will be using are red and black as this colour code blends well together and creates exciting visuals to entice the reader.
Red: This colour gives a sense of urgency and is often used in clearance sales. Red sends off the message of danger.
Black: Colour symbolises the darkness and evil. Creates a powerful mystery with hidden secrets
Yellow: Eye catching, fun, youthful, shows great confidence
